Kathleen McSweeney has served leaders for over 30 years. Her coaching career grew organically when she worked as a manager, facilitator, and internal consultant. Individual leaders were drawn to Kathleen by her focused listening, insightfulness, creative approaches, and practical recommendations. She began her independent coaching practice in 2001. Her clients include leaders in business, nonprofit, academia, and healthcare.

Kathleen’s leadership experience grounds her coaching practice. At L.L. Bean, Inc., as senior internal consultant, Kathleen co-designed and facilitated a leadership development process involving all managers, resulting in organization policy innovations and increased cohesive thinking among L.L. Bean leaders. She was part of a senior team who involved all employees in reducing operating expenses by ten million dollars.

Kathleen managed statewide training for Central Fidelity Bank, now Wells Fargo Bank. While at Crestar Bank, now Sun Trust, she facilitated teams in improving sales and customer service. The teams and her leadership were cited for their relevance and effectiveness. Kathleen was recruited by Owens & Minor, Inc. a nationwide medical products distribution company, to create a leadership and team development department. She was selected by Jane H. Hopkins, consultant to Vice President Al Gore, to co-design the proposal for the first United States Cabinet retreat, held in 1993. Kathleen has served on civic and nonprofit boards of directors and is an alumna of Leadership Metro Richmond.

Kathleen has studied organizational and family systems with thought leaders such as Peter Senge, David Cooperrider, and Virginia Satir, and is certified in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. She earned a B.A. in English from the University of Notre Dame of Maryland and an M.Ed., with honors, in Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University. Kathleen’s work as a career counselor for 5 years at a highly respected women’s center in Richmond, Virginia inspired her interest in the challenges women leaders confront.
